Doris was born January 10, 1944, in Waco at Hillcrest Hospital to Adolph Ascher and Lorena Bertha (Bethke) Ascher. She grew up in Mart and graduated from Mart High School in the Class of 1962.

Doris was united in marriage with Joe D. Erskine on August 11, 1962, at St. John’s Church of Christ in Otto. They lived in Mart, and she continued her education, completing the business training program at 4C Business College in Waco, and was employed at Systems Service in Waco until the birth of their first child.

After the family lived in various towns due to Joe’s work, they settled in Marlin. Doris worked at Torbett-Hutchings-Smith Memorial Hospital in Marlin in the medical records office. After she ran a small home daycare business until 1986, she went back to work at the Falls County Hospital and Clinic as the emergency room clerk.

While still working, Doris began a hobby of baking and decorating cakes and cookies for her family and friends. This turned into a side business of providing decorated cookies, birthday cakes, and wedding cakes for local requests and the public in the surrounding areas. Her girls helped as the business grew large enough that she set up large tables on sawhorses to hold all the bakery items.

Doris was a member of the Falls County Historical Commission and coordinated the local Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day services. She enjoyed cross-stitching projects on plastic squares to share with her daughters.

Doris was a member of the First Methodist Church of Kosse and had been a Methodist when she lived in Mart, Marlin, and Waco, where she had helped with the children’s church. After her health had failed, Doris had resided at the Golden Year’s Nursing Home in Marlin since 2014, where she enjoyed and never missed playing Bingo, until the past week.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; brothers-in-law, Glenn Haigood and Tom Erskine; great-granddaughter, Julieanna Alfano; and nephew, James “Jimbo” Jobe.

She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Joe D. Erskine of Kosse; and 3 daughters, Lisa Erskine of Marlin, Nancy Erskine of Kosse, and Cindy and her husband Curtis Moore of Marlin. She has 6 grandchildren: David Strangmeyer and his wife Brittany, Johanna Moran, Ragen Alfano, and her partner Kyle Safady, Phillip Moore, Zachary Moore, and Joseph Erskine, and 8 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Kathy Asher Haigood of Mart; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Norman and Carolyn Erskine of College Station, sister-inlaw and brother-in-law, Judy and Larry Truett of Marlin, sister-in-law, Diane Erskine of Agawam, MA.; and many nieces and nephews.
