Elizabeth Jean Burke, a third grade teacher at Crockett Elementary and life-long resident of Jewett, Texas died unexpectedly on December 11, 2018 at the age of 42. Her death has left an emptiness in our hearts.

Elizabeth Burke was born in Houston on May 29, 1976. As a young child, Elizabeth attended First Baptist Church in Bellaire, Texas where she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at the age of 10 years old. Her family relocated to Jewett in 1989 and graduated from Leon High School in 1995. She then attended Jacksonville Baptist College where she earned an Associate Degree. She went on to attend Sam Houston State University, majoring in Elementary Education. In 2000, Elizabeth began her teaching career in Crockett ISD at Crockett Elementary. For the past 18 years, she taught third grade to well over 450 eager, young children. She was always seeking strategies to improve her teaching and ways to reach the most challenging students. One thing you would never hear Elizabeth say was, “There’s no hope for that kid”. Rita Pierson once said, “Every child deserves a champion-an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can be.” Elizabeth was a champion for all of her students.

She will be dearly missed as she was loved by many. Elizabeth or “Liz” as she was affectionately known, was a caring, loyal, strong, and selfless woman. She was an incredible daughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend. Liz dedicated much of her free time in service to the Lord and many charitable endeavors, including Sunday School Teacher, Song Leader, Finance Committee member at Little Flock Baptist Church and Texas Classroom Teacher Association chapter President. Liz was a bright star in our lives that will never fade.

Elizabeth is survived by her mother Gloria Jean Burke; her sister, Tricia Lynn Burke; her Uncle and Aunt, Ron and Linda Pettitt who were her second parents; Uncle and Aunt James and Becky Foley, Cousins, Ron and Jessica Pettitt Jr. , Lawrence and Danielle Williams (her favorite), Lea and Jamie Renee Garrett and Bubba Foley. Though she didn’t have nieces or nephews of her own, Elizabeth had a special love for Lawren, Trey and Kaylee Williams, Zackery Cleburne and Calista Pettitt, She is preceded in death by her sister, Kathryn Anne Burke and grandparents, Thomas Glen and Gladys Foley.
