Helen Marie (Johnson) Young

Helen Marie (Johnson) Young, of Groesbeck, passed away at Windsor Healthcare Residence on Friday, August 6, 2021, at age 93.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, August 8, 2021 at Fort Parker Memorial Park, with Rev. Tracy Sims officiating.

Helen was born on September 14, 1927 to Alford Johnson and Annie Langford Johnson at Oletha. They lived in Houston where she grew up.

Later in life, Helen moved with her children to Groesbeck, where she met and was united in marriage with Arnold Red Young. Her oldest son, R. T. actually knew Red before Helen met him, while he was hanging around where Red worked at Franklin Jackson’s auction barn and John Coleman Cook’s cattle pens. He admired this man and wished for him to be his daddy. When Red and Helen were married, Red accepted all four of Helen’s children, R. T., Rita, James Ray and Deborah and raised them like his own. Helen and Red added two more children to the family, Michael and Mary, and they all grew up together as one large family.

Helen was a wife, mother, homemaker, and loved to be at home for her family. Helen was a wonderful cook; it was her joy to prepare meals for her family, whether daily or for large Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. She kept freezers full of food and a room-size pantry, ready to prepare a meal at any time, with her ham being a special favorite of R.T. and banananut bread being a favorite of James Ray. Michael’s and Mary’s friends loved to come to their home to visit and swim, and knew Mrs. Young would have something good cooked for them.

Helen not only loved her family, but had a kind heart for animals, taking care of all the stray dogs left at her home on the Thelma Road. There would be 6 to 10 dogs at the time, and a special cat, Sugar, who lived safely in the house. Several years after Red passed away, Helen became a resident at Windsor.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Arnold Red Young; and all her siblings: brothers, Eugene Johnson, Billy Joe Johnson, Penny Johnson, and Henry Johnson, and sister, Faye Biggs Stafford.

She is survived by her six children: daughter, Rita Davidson of Groesbeck; son and daughter-in-law, R.T. and Peggy Beck of Groesbeck; son and daughter-in-law, James and Kim Beck of Mexia; daughter, Deborah Walton of Groesbeck; son, Michael Young of San Antonio; and daughter, Mary Waldrop of Groesbeck. There are six grandchildren: James Owens and wife Shannon of Groesbeck, Lee Owens of Groesbeck, Lacey Baldwin of Groesbeck, Brent Beck of Mexia, Kit Waldrop of Lake Mexia, Mikey Young of San Antonio, Alejandra Young of San Antonio; and great grandchildren.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to the caregivers and staff at Windsor Rehabilition Residence for the care given to Mrs. Young.
