Horace Brooks

Horace Brooks, of Groesbeck, passed away at his home Tuesday, December 6, 2022, at age 85.

A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, December 10, 2022, in the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Joe Peoples of Robinson officiating.

Horace was born in Groesbeck on February 21, 1937, to Pauline Moore Brooks and raised by his mother and stepfather, George Brooks in the Thelma community. He attended grade school in Groesbeck and high school in Waco.

Horace was united in marriage with his beloved, Janice, on June 17, 1960, in Waco, where they lived the next 30 years and raised their children.

Horace was licensed as a plumber after finishing plumbing school in Waco from 1958 through 1962 and later became a Licensed Master Plumber. He worked many years with Staas Plumbing in Waco until he retired in 2002 and was a member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union #529.

Horace and Janice loved dancing and attended dances every weekend at the VFW halls unless they were busy camping, which they also enjoyed. Horace was a jokester and loved to make everyone laugh. He kept Janice laughing for 62 years, and the kids enjoyed growing up in their home. Everybody seemed to like him.

Horace and Janice moved back to Horace’s homeplace in the Thelma community, and he farmed and raised cattle until his health prevented this about ten years ago. He could fix anything and loved to work on cars, with his family never needing to take vehicles to a mechanic. He worked on many hot rods for other racers.

Horace and Janice raised three of their grandchildren through their high school years, with 2 graduating in Mart and l in Groesbeck. He loved them all, from babies through their adult years, and taught them all the skills he knew, including mechanics, plumbing and welding.

Horace is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janice Brooks; daughter, Deborah Brooks and her friend, Vickie Hinds of Waco; son, Ricky Don Brooks of Groesbeck; grandchildren: Chad Don and Amber Brooks of Groesbeck, Aaron Daniel Brooks, Ty Wayne and Kailey Brooks; and an honorary grandson, Nicklos Beveridge of Groesbeck, who was a part of their family as were his children. His great-grandchildren are Keeley Brooks and Dooley Brooks of Groesbeck, Lily Brooks, Marilyn Brooks, and Emmry Brooks of Waco, River Brooks and Kruz Salazar of Troy; and honorary greatgrandchildren, Aurbery Beveridge, Brynlee Beveridge, and Dakota Beveridge of Groesbeck. He is also survived by two sisters, Sandra Jean Hinton of Robinson and Sandra Ann Beil of Groesbeck, and a brother, Glenn Hendrix of Bandera.
