Joyce Addie Hopkins, of Kosse, passed away at Windsor Healthcare Residence in Groesbeck on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at age 68.
A Memorial service to celebrate Joyce’s life was held on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at the First Baptist Church of Kosse, with Pastor Jack Wren officiating.
Joyce was born January 25, 1951 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to Raymond Robinson, Sr. and Theda (Lloyd) Robinson, who have preceded her in death. She grew up in Baytown and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School.
While Joyce was visiting her aunt and uncle at their café in Midway, she was spotted by a Midway fellow, and he hurried over to meet her and that romance for the next three months led to their marriage.
Joyce was united in marriage with Charles H. Hopkins on December 23, 1970 in the Elwood Baptist Church. They had been married for 48 years at the time of her death.
Joyce and Charles lived in the Oklahoma Panhandle area most of their lives. Joyce was a wife, mother and housewife, although she worked some at a hospital and then home health care for a rancher’s wife. They moved to Kosse, TX in 2002, after the meat packing house where Charles had worked closed. They really enjoyed the less severe weather of central Texas.
Joyce was a Baptist all her life, and a member of the Kosse Baptist Church. She was the main influence in bringing her husband Charles to Christ early in their marriage, insisting he go to church with her. With God’s help, she helped him stop drinking and smoking. She also was instrumental in raising her three children in church. Her oldest son claimed he had a drug problem – “drug to church every Sunday.” But they give her the praise for her godly life and influence on them. She was a student of the Bible and knew many scriptures by heart and was happy to witness to others.
Joyce dearly loved all her family very much. She enjoyed collecting bells and was given many bells as gifts. Her baby sister in Oklahoma gave her a crystal bell every Christmas. She was a wonderful cook and baker. She baked homemade rolls, cinnamon rolls, and everything was made “from scratch.”
She used her homemade food in her witnessing for Christ, freely sharing the food and praying with others. She baked many cookies for adult Bible study meetings. Her activities slowed in the last fifteen years due to health problems. However, she had made herself known and loved in the community and will be greatly missed by her family and her church friends.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Charles Hopkins of Kosse; son and daughter-in-law, Raymond E. and Leah Hopkins of Kosse; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmie L. and Beverly Hopkins of Troy; daughter and son-in-law, Rene M. and James Kilgore of Temple; granddaughter, Tabitha M. Kilgore of Temple; grandson, Kyle J. Kilgore of Temple; grandson, William and wife Kat Jones of Waco; grandson, Tyler Jones of Kosse; great grandchildren, Selena Jones, Caleb Jones, and Carson Jones; brother Raymond Robinson of Oklahoma City, OK; sister, Alma Robinson of Kosse; brother and sister-in-law, Jimmie T. and Connie Robinson of Raymond, Washington; sister and brother-inlaw, Nancy L. and Dan Shepherd of Oklahoma City, OK; and nieces and nephews.
