Kevin Lee Henderson

Kevin Lee Henderson, of Old Union, passed away Friday, December 11, 2020, at Hillcrest Hospital in Waco, at age 64.

Graveside services were held on Monday, December 14, 2020, at Old Union Cemetery, with Pastor Jon Honea officiating.

Kevin was born October 1, 1956 to Bobby Lee and Elsie (Matula) Henderson at Freeport, their only child. He grew up in Freeport and graduated from Brazosport High School. After winning a scholarship for a speech he wrote, Kevin attended Brazosport College, majoring in Criminal Justice.

Kevin met Kim Elaine Moore, from Brazoria, while they were both attending college. After dating four years, they were united in marriage on February 13, 1981 at United Methodist Church in Brazoria.

When Kevin graduated, he went to the Department of Public Safety Academy in Austin, graduating near the top of his class. He liked his criminal justice training, but he moved back to Freeport near his parents and worked at Dow Chemical, where his Dad had began working as a teenager.

Kevin and Kim lived in Jones Creek from 1981 through 1994, and then they moved to Limestone County on his grandparents farm at Old Union. He had spent many happy times at Old Union with his grandfather Oscar “Preacher” Henderson and grandmother, Edith Henderson, at their farm and their “Old Union Store.” Kevin went to work at the Limestone County Jail and then the Groesbeck Police Department. Kevin retired from this work about five years ago with health problems. Kevin enjoyed returning to Freeport for his class reunions and visiting with his friends.

Kevin and Kim made a home for many rescue dogs and were willing to take in homeless dogs when called from the Vet’s office. They had all kinds, but primarily Shelties and Border Collies, and one of their border collie puppies was trained by Kim to be a therapy dog that she took with her to work at the Mexia State School. Loving and taking care of these dogs kept Kevin busy as well as provided hours of enjoyment at home.

Kevin was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and his mother-in-law, Barbara Moore.

He is survived by his wife, Kim Henderson of Old Union; father-in-law, George Moore of San Marcos; brother-in-law, Kelly Moore and his wife Linda of Brazoria; sisters-in-law, Cynde Shiller and her husband Joe of Tomball and Kathy Stopkey and her husband Mark of San Antonio; and many nieces and nephews.
