Lee Dunn Weihrich
Lee Dunn Weihrich, 83, passed away at her home in Kosse, on May 11, 2022. Lee was born November 1, 1938, in Minneapolis, to James Walthall “Jim” Dunn and Helen Bailey Dunn.
The family moved to Jim’s hometown of El Paso, when Lee and her younger brother, Jim, were in junior high. Lee graduated from El Paso High School in 1956. She raised her three girls in Magnolia, Texas, from 1970 to 1987 before settling in Kosse, where she’s spent the last 35 years making wonderful friends and building lifelong memories on the Rafter M Ranch.
Even though she moved away from El Paso in 1966, Lee always considered herself a West Texas girl at heart. She was known for her feisty, straight-talking, hard-working, cowgirl spirit. From the time she got her first horse at 16 and started calf roping, she was hooked on ranch life. She believed there was nothing in life that couldn’t be fixed or cured with just a little fresh air. She spent many years raising cattle and horses and, even at 83, Lee still loved riding around her place on the side-by-side.
The Rafter M was always wide open to Lee’s friends and the friends of her children and grandchildren. Everyone who passed through the front gate felt at home and walked away with great memories of a welcoming place. Lee, or, as everyone called her, “Mawmaw”or “Miss Lee,” loved nothing better than to be surrounded by people down at the arena or circled up on the back carport, laughing, talking, and sharing funny stories. Lee also served her community well for many years as Treasurer of Kosse Lions Club and through other acts of service. She had an extra special love for young people and enjoyed finding ways to invest in their lives.
Lee was preceded in death by her father, Jim; mother, Helen; and brother, Jim, who she was longing to see again in Heaven.
She will be greatly missed by her three daughters, Sharon Nolan and husband Larry Nolan of Kosse, Cindy Davis and husband Lee Davis of Washington, Texas, and Judy King of Salado, Texas; by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Ryan Haynie and wife Lacey of Bremond, Texas, and their children, Russ and Gracelee, Zach Haynie and wife Jenny of Kosse, Texas, and their children, Colt and Luke, Kyle King of Salado, Texas, and Carson King, a student at Texas A&M University; and by her step-grandchildren, Michelle King Tucker and husband Keith of Burnet, Texas, and Dannon King and wife LeeAnn of Leander, Texas, and their children, Carter and Wyatt. Survivors also include Lee’s beloved sister-in-law, Peggy Dunn of El Paso and her children and grandchildren, along with countless others who knew and loved her.
Graveside services were held on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at Ebenezer Cemetery in Kosse, with Pastor Lynn Kemp of the Common Ground Cowboy Church officiating. Pallbearers included Lee’s sons-in-law, Larry Nolan and Lee Davis, and grandsons, Ryan Haynie, Zach Haynie, Kyle King, and Carson King. Honorary pallbearers included David Garrett, Kelly Cox, Aslone Foy, and Brian Bingham.
In keeping with Lee’s love for young people, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to support the Children and Youth Ministry at Common Ground Cowboy Church, PO Box 280, Bremond, TX 76629.
