Lucio Ybarra, Jr.
Lucio Ybarra, Jr., of Groesbeck, passed away at Mexia LTC Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at age 79.
A Rosary was recited in the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, Feb. 11, and visitation with the public was held on Saturday, Feb. 12.
Ybarra was born in Thornton Nov. 10, 1942, to Lucio Ybarra, Sr. and Matilde (Rodriquez) Ybarra. After first grade in Thornton, they moved to Groesbeck in 1949 where he attended the remaining years of school.
Lucio traveled from home and went to Littlefield, Tx., where he worked in a cotton field driving a tractor. There he met Isaura “Sara” Vargas while she was chopping cotton. One month later, they were married and moved back to Groesbeck. They raised a family of six, carrying on the tradition of his family’s names beginning with “L,” in choosing the names of his children.
Junior worked at many different jobs in his lifetime. He worked at Hobbs Bonded Fibers in Groesbeck and spent many years as the personal butler for Hazel Hobbs. While his wife took care of Mrs. Hobbs’ home, Lucio took care of the yard and anything else she needed. He was her driver for anywhere she wanted to go, and patiently waited for her until she was ready to leave.
Lucio also worked for many people in the Groesbeck area taking care of their lawns. He was a people person and always happy to volunteer to help others in any way he could. His wife “Chowy” and children came first, and he went above and beyond to provide anything they needed. If he could find a way to make it happen, he did. He was proud of all his children’s accomplishments.
He loved all sporting events and never missed an event his kids participated in, as long as his health allowed him to travel. He encouraged the kids and grandkids and pushed them to win; he was very competitive. He loved fishing and taking the grandchildren to fish, and they either ate or gave away what they caught.
Lucio and Sara were members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mexia, where they raised their children. He was a provider, protector, and everything a husband and father should be. His wife Chowy’s health was extremely important to him. He did what he needed to do to take care of her.
Lucio was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Librado Ybarra and a son, Leonard Ybarra.
He is survived by his wife, Isaura “Chowy” of Groesbeck, their five children and their spouses: LeeRoy and Teresa Ybarra of Pensacola, FL, Lizabeth and Kenneth Doan of Henderson, Lorenzo and Betty Ybarra, of Mexia, Lisa and Robbie Jefferson, of Magnolia and Linda and Jason Fish of Lorena. He has 12 grandchildren: Cecilia Ybarra, LeeRoy A. Ybarra, Aleecia Ybarra, Joshua Doan, Ashley Doan, Alitza Ybarra, Martel Jefferson, Coverson Jefferson, Isaiah Jefferson, Jaylah Fish, Daylen Fish and Elyana Fish; and 11 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Luisa “Lou” Lopez of Groesbeck and brother, Lionardo “Leo” Ybarra and wife Virginia of Groesbeck and many nieces and nephews.
