Margaret Rae Fitts

Margaret Rae Fitts, formerly of Mexia, passed away in Temple on Sunday, May 14, 2023, at age 81.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at Fort Parker Memorial Park Cemetery, with Pastor Jason Hoffman of the First Baptist Church of Elkhart officiating.

Margaret was born October 30, 1941, in Houston to Raymond Campbell and Lorraine Parnell Campbell. She graduated from Mexia High School in the Class of 1960, then received a Bachelor of Education degree from Sam Houston University and a Master of Education degree from Stephen F. Austin University.

Margaret was united in marriage with Billy Ray Fitts on May 6, 1966, in Mexia, and they made their home in Mexia all their life.

Margaret taught at the Mexia State School for many years and after she retired, she continued teaching Special Ed in the Marlin and Groesbeck schools.

Margaret was always by her husband Billy’s side, in all his ranching activities, and attending football and basketball games to watch his nieces and nephews play. She loved all animals, especially dogs and cats.

Margaret was a sweet lady who never had a bad word for anyone. The staff at the two nursing homes where she had lived in her last years talked about how sweet she was and that she liked everybody. She was a member of the Temple Baptist Church in Mexia.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Billy in 2011, and other extended family members.

She is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Marilyn Campbell of Rusk and Mark and Annalou Campbell of Salado; nephew, Jamie Campbell and wife Julie; nieces, Melonie Hoffman and husband Jason, Evan Barbosa and husband Tim Mollohan, and Dylan Barbosa; special friend, Tiffany Wilson of Belton; sister-in-law and brother-inlaw, Johnnie (Fitts) and Dale Wilson of Groesbeck; niece, Charlotte and husband, Todd Amick; nephew, Scott and wife, Brandye Wilson; cousin, Patsy Posey; and great nieces and nephews and cousins.
