Robert Wayne Nicholson
Robert Wayne Nicholson, of Groesbeck, passed away Friday, November 20, 2020, at Providence Hospital in Waco, at age 74.
Graveside services were held on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at the Faulkenberry Cemetery Pavilion, with Pastor Jon Honea officiating. Alec Nicholson was an Honorary Pallbearer.
Robert was born December 22, 1945 to Jay Wallace Nicholson and Mary Zell Nicholson in Laurel, Mississippi. He moved to Groesbeck around 1963 and graduated from Groesbeck High School in the Class of 1965, and remained a proud Groesbeck Goat. He definitely caught the eye of Eddie Helen Engram when he arrived. He had beautiful black hair in a perfect sweep back on the side to a ducktail in the back and drove a souped-up black car. Eddie Helen’s dad did not approve of her and Robert, but then he didn’t approve of any boy dating her. However, she and Robert did get together (maybe on the drag at town or at the Nik Nak.) She was crazy about him and he definitely was crazy about her.
Robert and Eddie Helen Engram married on October 22, 1967 in the living room at her Dad’s house. Not long after their marriage, he served in the U. S. Navy. Eventually, her father and Robert became good buddies, working on everything from cows to cars.
Robert was an artist when it came to welding, and he used those skills with his career with Lone Star Gas (which is now Atmos), until his retirement.
Robert was always very active in the community. This involved being a part of the Volunteer Fire Department, the Jaycee club for underprivileged youth, and running for Mayor in 1988. He could fix anything and loved working with Eddie Helen at the Red Stocking Follies, running the stage lights, while she did makeup, and maybe even joined in a performance once in a while.
When their daughter Tammie was born in 1969, Robert had a new girl in his life. He loved Tammie and did anything and everything she asked for or needed. He developed a great passion for photography, especially when it came to taking photos of his daughter. He eventually made a hobby out of taking wedding photos, graduations, and portraits.
He worked hard as a room parent for Tammie’s class; he built floats and did anything the band needed. His life changed forever when he lost his Eddie, and then when Tammie, his precious baby girl, passed away in 2010.
Through all the good times and hardship in his life, Robert always carried a very infectious smile and laugh. He was always able to make anyone around him laugh at any time.
Robert was preceded in death by his father and mother; his wife, Eddie Helen Nicholson; his daughter, Tammie Lynn Nicholson; and his brother, Larry Wallace Nicholson.
He is survived by his granddaughter, Faith Helyn Nicholson of Groesbeck; his sister and brother-in-law, Diane Nicolson-Sanders and Henry Sanders of Utica, MS; sister and brother-in-law, Danice Bond and Bob Barrington of Utica, MS; niece, Janice Nicholson-Marschall and her husband Bryan of Groesbeck; and great nephew, Alec Nicholson of Groesbeck.
