Ruby Lee (Thompson) Burger

Ruby Lee (Thompson) Burger, 78 of Groesbeck, Texas passed away surrounded by her family on Monday, May 20, 2019. She is dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all that knew her. Private services and interment will be held with the family at a later date in Perryton, Texas.

Ruby was born on August 15, 1940 in Perryton, Texas to Charlie and Verlie “Burt” Esther (Tipton) Thompson. She was raised in Farnsworth, Texas with her 6 siblings and later moved to Spearman, Texas in her early 20s. Ruby graduated from Perryton High School with honors. She married Bill Burger and together they raised two daughters, Bambi and Neta. She spent her life working for Spearman Independent School District until her retirement. In 2004, Ruby moved to Groesbeck, Texas to be closer to her daughters and grandchildren. She had a great sense of humor and has left those close to her with memories to laugh about for years to come. She loved animals of all shapes and sizes and would never turn one away. Whether it was a raccoon, a potbellied pig, prairie dogs, or baby squirrels, Ruby would do everything she could to care for them to the fullest extent-even if it meant inviting them into her home! Her spare time was often spent by Lake Limestone watching the birds and deer. She enjoyed being so far from town and experiencing nature.  She was always ready for an adventure whether that meant hunting fossils or bugs, killing snakes, playing hours of Skip Bo, or fishing.  She was a better mechanic than most men and could fix almost anything.  She was fearless. She loved all of her grandchildren and her door was always open for them to stay the night. She taught them so many things from scrapbooking, shooting bb guns, making the right sweet tea, arts and crafts, dominos, and board games. Her grandchildren never heard the word “no” leave her lips, especially when she would take them to Dollar General for weekend games and snacks. She loved her long phone calls in the evenings with her siblings and when her brother would visit from Oregon. Family meant everything to Ruby and she talked of her childhood and parents fondly.

Ruby’s family will remember her as being a follower of Christ, lover of animals, strong willed, determined, fearless, stubborn and a devoted selfless leader of the family. Ruby consistently put the needs of family, friends and even strangers before herself, exhibiting a Christ-like love to all of those who had the privilege of knowing her. Ruby will be dearly missed and never forgotten as her legacy lives on through her family.

Ruby is survived by her daughter, Bambi Narvarte and husband John; daughter, Neta Heath and husband David; grandsons, Leighton Rush and wife Jordyn, Brody Rush, and Braxton Rush; granddaughter, Tiffany Hill and fiancé Darren Allen; beloved pets, Skeeter and Bugs; siblings, Laura Urban, Shirley Havlik, Margaret Mercer, Charles Thompson, and Glen Frederickson; many nieces and nephews that she loved like her own; and her extended family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill Ray Burger, and twin, Ralph A. Thompson.
