Stephen Lewis Shelton
Stephen Lewis Shelton, of San Angelo, passed away at his home on Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at age 73, after a battle with his health.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 25, 2021 at the First Baptist Church of Groesbeck, with Dr. Keith Collier officiating. Burial followed in Faulkenberry Cemetery, where he was laid to rest by his parents and sister, and with military honors provided by the U.S. Air Force.
Honorary pallbearers were his very good friend, Leon C. Jackson of Missouri City, TX and his best-best friend and brother-in-law, James T. Dunlap of Garland.
Stephen was born July 4, 1947 in Gladewater to William Lewis Shelton and Emmie Marzelle (Davis) Shelton. He grew up in Midland, and graduated from high school where he had attended school Tommie Lee Jones and Laura Welch Bush.
He attended Odessa College for two years before he joined the U. S. Air Force. He served from 1966 through 1970 at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii, and he loved his time in the service and Hawaii.
After he was honorably discharged, Stephen worked for Texas Instruments in Austin, and then began his career with Exxon Mobile Oil Company in Midland, eventually moving with the company to Houston. He retired after 21 years, 6 months, and some days. After retiring he moved to San Angelo where his son Terry lived.
Stephen liked to keep up with current events in the news, and followed local politics in San Angelo, participating with letters to the local newspaper.
Stephen is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Brenda Dunlap; and brother, Stanley Howard Shelton.
He is survived by his daughter, Teresa Shelton of San Angelo and her children, Matthew Sellers and Vanessa Ponder; daughter, Christina Hamilton of Seminole and her children, Christopher Hamilton and Leeann Swanlaw; and son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Khristi Shelton of San Angelo and their children, Travis Shelton and Kaylee Shelton; and also three great grandchildren. Also surviving are his sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Dennis Chapman of Nacogdoches; and brother and sister-in-law, Kevin and Tammy Shelton of Midland.
