Tommie Oneta Singletary
Tommie Oneta Singletary, passed away at Groesbeck LTC on Monday, September 28, 2020, at age 96.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 2, 2020, at Lost Prairie Cemetery, with Dr. Keith Collier of the First Baptist Church of Groesbeck officiating. Although there is not a formal visitation time, anyone is welcome to pay their respects at Groesbeck Funeral Home during the regular hours of 8:00-5:00 through Thursday.
Honorary pallbearers will be David Sims, Raymond Sims, Markus Sims, Cade Singletary, Braxton Singletary, and Cody Weisinger.
Tommie was born November 14, 1923 to W. T. Tom Little and Gertie L. Brice Little at LaSalle. She grew up and attended schools in the area of Lost Prairie and LaSalle.
Tommie married Raymond “Sonny” Sims in 1945, after he had served in World War II. She bravely rode a train, even though it was her first time ever leaving Limestone County, to meet him in Nashville, TN where they were married.
After they were married they moved to Clute, TX, where they became parents of two boys and a daughter. Tommie was a homemaker and mother until Mr. Sims passed away. She then worked to support the children who were still in school, and was manager of Brockman’s Department Store in Angleton. Her kids were the best dressed in school from Brockmans, leaving kids to incorrectly think they must be rich.
Tommie met Thomas Rayford Singletary at church, being “fixed up” by friends. They were married in 1961, and his son, Terry was added with her children to become a new family. Her children thought highly of Rayford.
Tommie and Rayford moved to Groesbeck in 1979 to a new home in the Durham addition. Tommie took great pride in her beautiful yard and her perfectly decorated home. She also took great pride in dressing herself and Rayford, with coordinated colors for both anywhere they went.
Tommie was a very involved member of the First Baptist Church of Groesbeck and taught Sunday School many years. She participated in many activities and went on the church trips. She and Rayford were part of the Happy Time Strummers band, with Tommie playing the ukulele and Rayford playing the spoons. They also enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors to play cards and dominoes.
Tommie was preceded in death by her parents; her four sisters and three brothers; her daughter, Brenda Lee Sims; her first husband, Raymond “Sonny” Sims and her second husband, Thomas Rayford Singletary.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond and Peggy Sims and Tommy and Micky Sims; step-son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Maxell Singletary; six grandchildren and their spouses: David and Olga Sims, Erin and Cody Weisinger, Raymond and Jeniffer Sims, Markus Sims, Cade Singletary, and Braxton Singletary; twelve great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations of memory of Mrs. Singletary may be made to the First Baptist Church of Groesbeck.
