Lady Goats take on Rogers in bi-district playoff match

The Groesbeck volleyball team has had a banner season, and the Lady Goats will look to continue their success in the playoffs.

Groesbeck will take on Rogers in a bi-district round match at 6 p.m. today in Riesel. Rogers finished third in District 19-3A.

Groesbeck finished its regular season with a 20-4 overall record. The Lady Goats were the District 20-3A runner-up with a 12-2 slate. They split two matches with district-champion Fairfield, which is ranked No. 23 in the state.

The Lady Goats lost to Fairfield in the first round, three sets to one, but rebounded to score a 3-1 victory in the second round. It was Fairfield’s only district loss in 14 matches.

Groesbeck’s other loss in district play was a grueling five-set decision at Teague. The Lady Goats fell behind in the match, two sets to none. But they won the next two sets and led in the deciding fifth set before Teague mounted a comeback and escaped with an 18-16 victory.

Groesbeck rolled through its non-district campaign, losing only to two highly ranked teams. The Lady Goats were beaten by Crawford, which is ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 2A, and Leon, which is ranked No. 4 in 2A. Among their victories was a three-set sweep of Class 4A Mexia.

The Lady Goats had a strong district campaign, as well. In their 12 victories, they lost just one set. Eleven of the wins were 3-0 sweeps.

Groesbeck enters the playoffs on a five-match winning streak. Their last loss was the five-set defeat at Teague on Oct. 6.
