Bridges 5K Run awards top runners, walker

Roxanne Thompson Staff Writer

Running and walking enthusiasts across the area met for the Bridges to Better Health 5K Run/Walk Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Old Navasota River Bridge.

The top male runner was Diego Rivera, of Mexia, with a time of 17:20. The top female runner was Macie Martinez, of Mexia, with a time of 20:16. The top walker was Gracen Allen, of the Teague area.

The health-oriented event is sponsored jointly by Parkview Regional Hospital, in Mexia, and Limestone Medical Center, in Groesbeck. They started the Bridges 5K in 2012, so this was the sixth annual run.

Fifty runners participated and about 25 walkers. The numbers were lower than usual because the Groesbeck High School track team, which usually sends dozens of runners, had a conflicting event.

Another couple of dozen volunteers took part in the event, too, some showing up as early as 6:45 a.m. to set up the tables and supplies needed, mark the route, register the entrants and complete paperwork as they arrived, then later to time them and do other tasks.
