Kaden Kurtz, 10, of Waco, admires the fish he reeled in after Mexia Bass Club member Shane Dawson, of Teague, helped him remove it from the fishing line at last year’s Youth Trout Clinic. This year’s event will take place at Fort Parker State Park on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 27-28. The free, family-friendly event is a joint project of the Mexia Bass Club and the Park. All gear and bait is provided, and members of the Bass Club will be on hand to help the children.

Kids to get free fishing opportunity next weekend

Families who want to introduce their children to the fun of fishing will have a free, family-oriented event to attend next weekend: the annual Youth Trout Clinic at Fort Parker State Park.

The Mexia Bass Club co-sponsors the event with the Park, and with Texas Parks and Wildlife Fisheries. Members of the Bass Club will be on hand to teach casting, knot tying and work with children to catch fish.

Admission is free, and fishing rods-and-reels and bait are provided for use free of charge. Even if a parent knows nothing about fishing, he or she can bring their children, knowing that the kids will be able to learn from friendly local experts.

Saturday is reserved for children 5-12, but Sunday will be open to children 5-l7. The fishing clinics take place in two-hour sessions, scheduled as follows.

Saturday, Jan. 27 - 9-11 a.m., noon-2 p.m. and 3-5 p.m., for children 5-12 only.

Sunday, Jan. 28. - 1-3 p.m., for children 5-17.

Register children by calling the park at 254-562-5751 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. daily. Children 12 and under are free; everyone 13 and older pays only the $4 park entrance fee.
