First Days and Last Days…Both Upon Us
Just Checking in on your New Year’s resolutions. How have the last four weeks gone for you on that? A new beginning has been possible to end old bad habits. Even more exciting, January was a time for others to begin their First New Year. Early New Year’s Day just past midnight, the first 2018 Texas babies were born: Fabian Garcia was born 12:13 a.m in Amarillo. the first Texan in 2018. Jose Hermida was born 12:19 a.m in a Houston, Hopsital. Fernanda Martinez born 12:38 a.m. in Arlington. In fact, according to Joyce Mauk, president of the Texas Pediatric Society, “One out of ten babies born in America this past year were born in Texas. Incredibly, 10% of all “first days” for American newborns occurred in our state.
Those First days with new beginnings is wonderful news for many families. But, what if you knew that for you and your family…for your country that these were the last days. In the Old Testament, God warned his people, Israel, that their last days, as a nation, were approaching soon. Micah 4:1 declared:
In the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains and it shall be exalted above the hills; people shall flow unto it. Many nations shall come, and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob.”
Joel 2:28-31 predicted: “(in the last days), I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh… before the day of the Lord comes.” These prophesies pointed to the “Last Days” of Israel before its destruction. Centuries later, on Pentecost AD 33, Peter declared the fulfillment of those prophesies had begun. Peter preached: “This is what the Prophet Joel meant concerning Israel’s “last days” (Acts 2:16-17). Along with Israel’s doom, that day revealed salvation for those who would turn to Jesus (v. 21, 38-41). Jesus also predicted the end of Israel’s “last days” and its annihilation. He promised it would occur within that generation’s lifetime (Matt. 24:33-34). By 70 A.D., it was over. Israel was swept off the earth as a nation. Its temple and cities destroyed; and its sparse remnant survivors spread among the gentile nations of the world. All who wish to be God’s chosen people today must become Christians (1st John 3:1; 1st Pet. 2:9-10).
In the New Testament, God predicts another world-wide “Last Days” yet to be fulfilled (2nd Pet. 3:3-11)…not for a nation, but for all the earth. Jude 1:14 declares: “The Lord is coming with 10,000’s of his holy ones, to execute judgment on all & to convict the ungodly…you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: ‘In the last time there will be scoffers’” (v. 16). Beloved, “this world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever” (1st Jn. 2:17). www.groesbeckcoc.com
