God Insisted: “No Other gods But Me”

By Clifton Fox, Church of Christ

This may come as a shock to you: But, God does not expect or require anyone to keep the 10 Commandments today. The fact is that the 10 Commandments, which were written by the finger of God on two tables of stone, were received by Moses as a Covenant and Law for the Jews alone (Deut. 4:11-13). It was never given as a covenant law to any other people… not to us, not to gentile nations, not even to their forefathers (Adam, Noah, Abraham).

Really! Read what Moses told the Israelites: “The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. The Lord did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, who are all of us here alive today. The Lord spoke with you saying: "'I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me” (Deut. 5:2-7). This is the 1st of the 10 Commandments listed in Deut. 5. Therefore, the 10 Commandments were first enacted as God’s covenant with the Israelites alone; and no one else.

However, Israel persistently broke the 10 Commandments. They especially broke the first one (“Have no other gods before me”). Most of the Old Testament was written to record this tragedy. God struggled with them for a thousand years, through a dozen prophets, to end their defiance of the first commandment (“no other gods before me”). During one period of their idolatrous rebellion, Jeremiah predicted the 10 Commandments Covenant was going to be replaced with a “New Covenant” (Jer. 31:31-34). Please, read it for yourself. 700 years later that change was enacted by Christ through New Testament Christianity.
