Honor Your Father & Mother
My theme for last Sunday’s sermon focused on the 5th Command of the 10 Commandments; “Honor thy father and mother” (Deut. 5:1-16). As that text clearly states, the 10 Commandments were given only to Israel, and never was a law for us today. However, God repeated that command in the New Testament for our obedience. This New Testament command was given with promises attached, and was actually spoken to children. “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother (this is the first commandment with a promise), that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land” (Eph. 6:1-3).
Whenever your kids are disrespectful, you can take comfort in the thought that even our wise heavenly Father did not always receive the honor from His children which He deserved. Here is a humorous take on the conversations in Genesis 3 between God and His children; Adam and Eve:
