Everyone needs God’s forgiveness of sins. However, God’s forgiveness of our sin is on hold until we forgive others. Jesus taught His disciples to pray, “Our Father in heaven … Forgive us for doing wrong, as we forgive others.”
Jesus explained what He meant when He said, “If you forgive others for the wrongs they do to you, your Father in heaven will forgive you. But if you don’t forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.” (Matthew 6:12, 14-15) What a terrifying thought. God forgives us “if” we forgive others.
Someone might say, “I don’t feel right about forgiving that person for the wrong they did to me.” No doubt, feelings run high in those wronged. But, God’s blessing, the joy that comes from forgiving another, never flows until the wronged party forgives. First, there is the act of forgiving and then the feeling of forgiveness.
