Shepherd Sayings

Pastor Jack, Kosse Baptist Church

Have you ever wondered what it felt like to receive a death sentence? That is to have said to you, “You are going to die in so many days or hours by a firing squad, rope, etc.” Thank God, I haven’t either! There is a Bible story about a man called Barabbas. Barabbas is on death row and out of choices. Barabbas is going to die.

However, something happened and Barabbas walked out of prison a free man. (Matt. 27:11-26) Jesus is on trial before the Roman Judge Pilate. Pilate, a weak and fearful man, knowing that Jesus is innocent, tries to release him. (27:18). There was a custom in those days that the Governor could release any prisoner the crowd chooses. Therefore, Pilate put the question to the crowd, “Whom do you want me to release to you; Jesus Barabbas or Jesus Christ?” (27:16) The crowd, manipulated by the chief priest and elders, ask for Barabbas to go free and for Jesus’ death. (27:20) I believe if they had asked Jesus, “Shall we crucify your or Barabbas,” he would have said, “Crucify me.” Many believe that the cross on which Jesus died was the very cross planned for Barabbas. How do you suppose Barabbas felt when he was given freedom instead of death?
