Shepherd Sayings November 30, 2017
The Bible simply says, “Mary gave birth to her first born, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room in the inn.” (Luke 2:7) Maybe these words can be taken as symbolic rejection by both the innkeeper and the world. However, just for a moment, let’s think about a good word for the innkeeper.
Perhaps the most important truth concerning the innkeeper is that he knew a lot less about Jesus than we do. Today, we have 2000 years of Christian history to help us know who Jesus is.
We have the record of the angel, who said, “Give him the name Jesus.” (Luke 1:31) There is the account of God’s voice from heaven saying, “This is my Son, listen to Him.” (Matthew 17:5)
Folks, the innkeeper knew a lot less about Jesus than we do. We know 1000 times more about Jesus than he did. Yet the question remains, have we treated Jesus much better? Have we trusted Him to save us? Will we devote our lives and fortunes to Him? Is He the Lord of our wills?
Before we criticize the innkeeper too much, we need to ask ourselves, “what have I given to Jesus?’ You see the important truth here is, not so much what the innkeeper did to the unknown Jesus. Rather, a question of more personal importance for you and me is, “What will we do if Jesus knocks at our heart’s door?”
Heavenly Father, help us learn more about Jesus this Christmas season than ever before. Increase our faith and put a hunger in our heats to welcome Christ Jesus into our lives this Christmas season. Amen
