Z Z Top’s “Sharp Dressed Man”… Clothed in Christ

By Clifton Fox, Church of Christ

In 1983, the band, ZZ TOP, produced a song that topped the Billboard Charts. It’s about a guy in a silk suit and black tie with fans who “Come running just as fast as they can…Cause everyone’s crazy about a sharp dressed man.” We’re supposed to picture a James Bond character, such as Sean Connery or Pierce Brosnan, in a tuxedo, stepping out of their Lamborghini at a red-carpet event. From a worldly perspective, it’s the image of awesomeness.

Awesomeness in Christianity is not about the sharp dressed man in a silk suit and black tie. God’s word says we are to “Show no partiality…if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your worship and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in and you pay attention to the one who wears fine clothing and say, You sit here in a good place, while you say to the poor man, You stand over there… have you not then made distinctions among yourselves” (James 2:3). Only hypocrites are all about their fancy clothes (Matt. 23:5, Rev. 3:17-18).

In Matthew 6:28, Jesus asks, “Why are you anxious about clothing?” And He concludes, “Do not be anxious, saying…'What shall we wear?” So, as I said, awesomeness in Christianity is not about the sharp dressed man.
