Fiddling Good Time

by Alexandra Cannon, Staff Writer

Saturday, May 6, the Groesbeck Chamber of Commerce hosted the 49th annual Southwestern Fiddle Festival Championships at the Convention Center. With competitors ranging in age from 10 year old Linda Masters to 87 year old Bill Mays, the competition was lively and full of raw talent. The contest was broken up into five divisions, based on age of competitors, and one for the accompanists, then a final round of fiddling by the first place winner of each age group category.

President of the Texas Old Time Fiddlers Association (TOTFA), Jordan Bankston, kept the contest organized and running smoothly, and John Allred acted as announcer for the event, introducing contestants in each division.

Groesbeck Masonic Lodge 354 provided BBQ plates for $10, and raffle tickets for a rifle by the Lions Club were also sold at the Fiddle Fest. Lasting from 11 AM to 4 PM, some attendees came and went, but a large majority arrived when the doors opened and stayed for the whole event, which gives credit to the display of talent for the entirety of the competition.
