Name the Armadillo

Meet our armadillo.

We can’t tell you much about the little thing. It’s hard to figure out if an armadillo is a guy or a gal – and since they can’t talk, we don’t know it’s name.

What we do know is that this armadillo is our new weatherman, uh, lady, er, forecaster. The rest is up to you.

Confused yet? Here’s the scoop.

Armadillos are the state mammal of Texas . . . well, kind of. Actually, there are three state mammals. Armadillos represent the small mammals, the Mexican free-tailed bat represents the flying mammals and, of course, the Texas Longhorn represents the large mammals.

(And just for grins and giggles, the northern mockingbird is the state bird, the blue lacy is the state dog, the horned lizard is the state reptile, the monarch butterfly is the state insect and the Guadalupe bass is the state fish – hey, who says you don’t learn anything reading newspapers!)

So talented artist Genny Lawson helped us create our little armadillo to give you the weekly weather forecast. Genny is also the talent behind a lot of our other characters and some of our ads. She has given us the armadillo you see today AND has shared some other versions for other occasions.

Where YOU come in is to help us name the little critter. Share your best ideas in an email editor@groesbeckjournal.com, and we’ll pick one lucky winner who will get a free subscription and a $50 gift card! But hurry and enter today. This contest won’t last long!
