The night Jesus was born there were shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their sheep. The sheep required care seven days a week and this kept the shepherds from weekly worship time in the temple. Others viewed them in violation of the religious laws and thus ceremonially unclean. They were viewed as uneducated and unskilled. How many shepherds the angels appear unto is not told. Moses, David and others are mentioned in the bible as shepherds. Jesus described Himself as the “good shepherd.” “I am the Good Shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” King David said, “The Lord is my shepherd: I shall not want.” What a lesson for our society today. Jesus came for all people regardless of who they are or what sins they may be living in. The shepherds immediately respond to the angel’s message “the savior is born” and visit Mary and the baby Jesus. It is of vital importance that anyone reading this devotion who has not trusted Jesus as personal savior immediately stops and prays, “Lord Jesus, I trust you as the only begotten Son of God come into my heart and be my savior.” This is why the baby Jesus was born to be “the savior of the world.” Is He your savior??
