49-0 shutout of Elkhart best win of season for Goats
That number just proves how impressive Groesbeck’s 49-0 stomping of the Elkhart Elks at Jerry Ives Memorial Stadium in Elkhart last Friday, Nov. 3 was. For 38 is the total yardage of total offense given up by the Goats to the Elks. In the words of Coach Steve Hale, “It was a complete game. Every part of it was the best-offense, defense, special teams. I am so proud of how we got after Elkhart.”
The win gave the Goats a 5-4 season record and a 3-3 District 9-3A record. They host Whitney at 7:30 p.m. Friday night in the final game of the regular season. It is a must win game if the Goats are to make the playoffs.
While the number 38 was impressive for the Goats, so too were the numbers 316 and 139. For they represented the offensive side of the Groesbeck statistics. The 316 was the passing yards put up by Ty Hale as he connected on 75% of his attempts, 24 of 32 with no interceptions and five touchdowns. The 139 ware the rushing yards in 26 carries by the Goat runners. Also helping were the 125 yards in penalties assessed Elkhart when they were flagged 12 times. They were more costly to the Elks than were the 105 yards in penalties assessed the Goats on 11 plays.
Hale looked like he was a gunnery master trying to zero in on the target when he first began passing the ball. He missed the first try, hit the next four passes and then missed the next four. By then he was zeroed in and in the second quarter, he completed 10 of 12 passes for 125 yards. He continued his streak into the third quarter hitting on seven of nine passes for another 96 yards.
