    Groesbeck Mayhugh finished second in the Brazos Valley League this summer and will be competing in the TTAB Boys 14U state tournament that is being held here in Groesbeck beginning Monday, July 24. Baseball: TTAB District 9 tourney results

The team of Groesbeck Hughes scored five runs in the first inning of Thursday evening’s Texas Teenage Association of Baseball District 9 12U Open Base tournament championship game and, held on for a 9-2 win to advance to the state tournament on July 24 in Brownwood.

Groesbeck’s first five batters all reached base and scored in the opening inning of play in Thursday’s ball game.

Allen Lewis popped a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to make it a 7-1 game, scoring Christopher Cowey on the play.

Groesbeck added another run in the third and one more in the fourth.

Anthony Lewis picked up the win on the mound for Groesbeck and Cowey came on in relief.

Monte Swaner, Dakota Davis and Nick Lawson pitched for Riesel.

The two teams faced each other on Wednesday evening, with team Hughes taking an 11-8 win over the Raiders.

Riesel wound up facing Mexia Swift that same evening to see who would advance to the championship game against Groesbeck.

Mexia barely missed slipping into the championship, falling in a high-scoring affair to Riesel, 13-12.

Brett Swift, Keydren Majors, Nathaniel Burns, Hunter Murphy, Armando and Tanner Briggs all scored two runs each for Mexia.

Riesel pick-up player Nick Lawson (Mexia Betts) led Riesel with three runs, Fernando Navarro (Mexia Betts) scored twice and eight players had one-run apiece.
