Goatettes won third in first UIL state volleyball tournament
On April 28, 1967, fifty years ago tomorrow, Groesbeck’s girls varsity volleyball team won third place in the first State Championship volleyball tournament under the guidance of the UIL. The Goettes as they were called then went to Austin after becoming one of the four Regional champions the week before. Under Coach Dana Prince, they traveled to Gregory Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Texas with either a 16-0 record or no worse than a 16-1 record. The UIL program printed for the April 28-29, 1967 State Tournament stated that Groesbeck had a 10-0 non-district mark, a 3-0 district mark in 12AA and a 3-0 Regional playoff mark.
It was a journey that for some of them began on the dirt courts in Thornton as the principal E.S. Ellis taught them the fundamentals of volleyball. Some of those players listed in the State Tournament program that began their volleyball playing there included Marlene Arney Rand, Sandra Parker, Kathy Nance Kilgore and Glynis Herod Rosas. The first three were seniors and listed as probable starters at the State Tournament. Rosas was one of two sophomores on the team roster for Austin along with Deanna Champion McKeever.
