Goats edged by Teague
It was déjà vu all over again. For the second week in a row, the Groesbeck Goats rallied from a deficit to pull within two points of their opponent with less than two minutes on the clock. This time, the opponent was the Teague Lions at home October 27. The Goats trailed 22-20 following a 25-yard touchdown pass from Ty Hale to Brandyn Canady with 40 seconds on the clock. Dylan Rand kicked the extra point for the 22-20 score. And like the week before, when Groesbeck scored to get to trailing West 21-19, Rand tried an onside kick. Dayveon Dixon recovered it for Teague. The Lions ran out the clock. Groesbeck stood 4-4 on the season and 2-3 in District 9-3A as a result.
Coach Steve Hale commented afterwards, “We made a lot of mental mistakes, missing our coverages at time. We played hard and never quit. We can make the playoffs by winning out.” The Goats are on the road this week at Elkhart at 7:30 Friday night. The regular season closes at home, Friday, November 10 as Whitney comes to town.
A key Goat player, Landen Frazier went out with a leg injury during the Teague game. He had a MRI over the weekend. At press time, it was not known how long he might be out of action.
The first quarter ended in a 0-0 tie. On the first play of the second quarter, Lion quarterback Zack Satterwhite threw a 40-yard scoring pass to Tyrese heard. Roberto Escobedo kicked the extra point.
Groesbeck answered on the kickoff as Ethan Davis went 83 yards down the left sideline to score with 11:22 left in the quarter. Rand kicked the extra point for a 7-7 tie.
