Goats fall to Mexia in Battle of the River football game

By Sean Turgeon Special to the Journal

The Groesbeck Goats traveled to Mexia to play a historic competition of rivalry. Groesbeck won the toss and elected to differ in the second half. A great start with an onside kick which was recovered by Groesbeck. The opening drive produced a first down. The next play was intercepted at the 25- yard line. The opening Blackcat drive went nowhere because of help from Nick Mosley and Zach Wilson. Groesbeck's second offensive possession stalled with some good defense by Mexia sacking Ty Hale forcing a punt. The second play of Mexia's offensive drive is picked off by Ethan Davis. This was a great drive by Groesbeck which set them up at the Mexia 46 -yard line. Some good runs by Ameer Lee and a pass by Ty Hale that could have changed the momentum and looked like six points was dropped and the Goats had to punt.

The great punt by Dylan Rand pinned the Blackcats deep in the red zone. The next play looked like the entire Groesbeck defense buried the quarterback for a safety and the first points of the game. Groesbeck 2, Mexia0.

The Goats second-quarter drive was stopped short by the Blackcat defense, although Cristian Venegas was dishing out some pain for the Goats. Two penalties against Mexia sent them backwards to their own 23-yard line but the very next play running back Jadrian Smith got free for a huge run to the Groesbeck 30-yard line, but it came back for a holding penalty.

Smith got loose took the ball to the yard line of Groesbeck where on following play he scored the first touchdown of the game. Mexia 7, Groesbeck 2.

A face mask call against the Blackcats on the kick off set Groesbeck up at the 45.  A blatant missed pass interference call kept the Goats at the Blackcat 33-yard line where with a third and two, Groesbeck received a holding penalty which forced a fourth-down decision by Coach Hale. Groesbeck picks up a first down and with 4:42 left in the half. Landen Frazier catches a Ty Hale pass for six, while the two-point conversion was no good.

Groesbeck 8, Mexia 7.

A long kickoff return but a great stop by Landen Frazier but deep in goat territory.

On a fourth and one, with 1:10 remaining in the half, Mexia scores plus a two-point conversion to lead at the half 15-8.

The Goat second half opening drive was stopped.

The Blackcat opening drive stopped by good defense by Mark Smith giving Groesbeck's second-offensive possession a spark.
