Goats hang on to win area series over Leon; Advance to Class 3A regional quarterfinals against Maypearl

By Stephen R. Farris, Journal Sports

Forget about the 18-1 win on Friday night over the Jewett-Leon Cougars and forget about the 3-2 loss to the same team on Saturday in Game 2.

In one of the most exciting extra-inning ball games – probably ever witnessed by Groesbeck Goat fans – the fate of the red and white hung in the balance as the bottom of the ninth inning began in Game 3.

With the score tied at 1-1 and the Goats at bat, fans leaned to the edge of their seats and lined up along the fences in hopes that some sort of miracle would come into play.

Little did they know that they were about to be amazed.

Groesbeck relief pitcher Kevin Montoya stepped into the batter’s box to lead off the inning at the plate.

The first pitch came in for a ball.

The next, Montoya took a clean, clear cut but the ball landed into the mitt of the Leon catcher for a strike.

Patiently, Montoya watched the next three pitches miss the strike zone and he calmly took his place at first base with the walk … then the excitement began.
