Groesbeck grad wreaks havoc on Lady Goats
For Leslie Drummond, the trip back home to her alma mater was a great trip for her. Now the head coach of the McGregor Lady Bulldogs, Drummond brought her District 19-3A squad to the Groesbeck Gym where she had played for the Lady Goats years before, and tightened up the District race with a hard-fought 3-1 win over the Lady Goats 22-25, 25-13, 27-25 and 25-17. Groesbeck dropped to a 5-3 district record and McGregor improved to a 4-4 district mark.
Groesbeck got outscored on serves into the net or long or out of bounds 7-2 in the match. And the Lady Goats had so many returns that were just barely out of bounds, that inches closer in would have made a difference. On the other hand, there didn’t seem to be an answer for McGregor’s middle blocker, Andrey Lillard who had 11 kills and five blocks. She was also dangerous on the back line as she had two serving aces. Her first block was the set decider for set two.
In the first set, Groesbeck trailed 21-22 after a Lillard kill. Paige Spivey tied the score with her kill and then proceeded to serve it out for the Lady Goat win. She was aided by a kill by Kennedy Cox for a 24-22 edge. Spivey served an ace to win the set.
