Groesbeck splits games with Marlin
In the nightcap game at the Groesbeck Gym, Tuesday, December 19th, the Goats hung on to beat the Marlin Bulldogs 55-50. That made the District 19-3A record for Groesbeck 1-1 and the season record 6-8. Marlin fell to a season mark of 2-6 and 0-1 in district. The Lady Goats showed a lot of fight in going down to the Lady Bulldogs 52-20. Groesbeck drops to 0-11 for the season and 0-2 in District 19-3A. Marlin is undefeated in district 3-0 and 14-6 for the year. The boys traveled to Canton for a non-conference game on Thursday, December 21. After Christmas, they are playing in the Rosebud-Lott Tournament on December 28-29. The Groesbeck girls are in the Thorndale Holiday Tournament December 27-28. In pool play, they were drawing host Thorndale and San Marcos Home School in the first two games.
The first quarter of the Goats game is where they built their initial lead that was big enough to stand the battering it took in the second half as Marlin never quit trying to overhaul the Goats. After one, Groesbeck led 18-10, At the half, the Goats had a 10-point margin 35-25. In the third quarter, the Bulldogs cut the Goat lead to six, 44-38. Groesbeck was outscored 12-11 in the fourth quarter, but got out of the gym with the narrow 55-50 win.
Three Goats were in double figures. Ameer Lee had top honors for Groesbeck with 13 points. Jake Pringle who led the Goat assault in the first quarter with six points finished with 11 points for the game. Ty Hale made five of six jumpers shooting 83% and two of three free throws for 12 points. Pringle was five of seven from the field shooting 71%. Lee made three of nine treys and two of four jumpers.
Other Goat scorers were Tyrique Carter with nine points including two of five three pointers, Chris Ramirez hitting on two of three shots from behind the arc for six points and Nick Mosley for four points. Mosley led with four rebounds, Pringle and Carter had three apiece.
Scoring for Marlin in double figures was Allik Brooks with 20, Lazazion Coleman with 13 and Christian Watson with 10 points.
