Lady Goats close district with win to earn No. 4 playoff seed
Groesbeck nailed fourth place in District 19-3A with a 3-0 win at home, Tuesday, October 24 over the Bruceville-Eddy Lady Eagles. The win gave Coach Renee Maritnez’s an 8-6 district mark and eliminated the possibility that there would have been a playoff match Friday with McGregor for the fourth spot. Groesbeck is meeting the third ranked in Texas Rogers Lady Eagles at their gym on Monday, October 30 at 6:00 P.M. in the Bi-District round. Rogers comes into that contest with a 26-1 record.
The final home match for Groesbeck featured two phases of change that come to every high school athletic program: players leaving and players just beginning. Getting recognized as seniors playing their final home match were Bianca Carrillo, Emily Garza and Paige Spivey. Brought up from the junior varsity to experience being part of a playoff team were Breann Bradley, Maggie Devrow, Kyla Evans and Kylee Rand.
The match went pretty fast as Groesbeck won 25-18, 25-18 and 25-13. It took only 55 minutes to complete the match. The first set stayed even until the Lady Goats broke a 9-9 tie on a kill by Kennedy Cox. Haylie Mitchell and Paige Spivey twice put in kills to build an 18-11 lead. Kaitlyn Bartek got a kill for Bruceville-Eddy to stop the home team briefly A kill by Madison Beesley and a serving ace by Jadyn Pavlas got the Lady Eagles within five at 20-15. But Groesbeck pulled steadily ahead and used a kill by Abby Johnson to end the first set.
