The Lorena Lady Leopards raced past the Groesbeck Lady Goats at the Groesbeck Gym, Tuesday, December 5 to the tune of 57-16. Groesbeck remained winless for the season while Lorena improved to 13-3 on the season. Groesbeck played in the Fairfield Tournament Thursday through Saturday, December 9th. Coach Andre Daversa commented, “We’re still a young team and slowly developing into being competitive. Those will be some tough teams for us to face in the tournament. We have to overcome our errors. It seemed like we turned the ball over 100 times.”
Lorena had the height advantage on Groesbeck and four starting seniors that had the experience edge on the Lady Goats. The tallest player on the court, Michelle Runyon led the way for Lorena scoring the first basket 18 seconds into the contest and following up 58 seconds later at the 6:44 mark with a free throw for a 3-0 lead. The Lady Leopards coasted through the first period apparently on the way to keeping Groesbeck from scoring. Then Kyla Evans hit a basket for Groesbeck with three seconds left in the first period to make the score 18-2.
Groesbeck made six points in the second quarter off a three-pointer by Kolbi Brown at the 4:28 mark, a free throw by Natleigh Brown with 1:42 to play and two free throws by Evans with 16 seconds left in the first half. Lorena had added 15 points to its side of the scoreboard during the period and led 33-8 at the half.
