Lady Goats hold off Lady Vikings in five set marathon
To have started a match at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, so that the Groesbeck Lady Goats could be through in time to make the 7:30 p.m. kickoff for the Goat football game in McGregor didn’t exactly work out when both teams went into a funk and couldn’t take control of the match. It drug on till past 6:30 p.m. before Groesbeck won out over the Vanguard Lady Vikings 25-15, 19-25, 25-21, 18-25 and 17-15.
The Lady Goats displayed a never quit attitude that allowed them to stay in a match which could have easily gone to Vanguard had its players utilized their middle blocker, Kendee Hilliard, even more than they did. She was unstoppable every time she got set up for kills that were unreturnable by the Lady Goat defense. She recorded 20 kills and four blocks and showed an athleticism unmatched by any other individual on the court.
Groesbeck had a team spirit and cohesion that allowed them to come back time and again when it appeared that Vanguard had taken control.
Abby Johnson led the Lady Goats with 10 kills and two blocks and served two aces for good measure to help lead them to victory. Paige Spivey provided some senior leadership as she put in eight kills and one block. Her final kill ended the match with the fifth set 17-15 win for the Lady Goats.
