A look at Week 9 in Texas High School Football
Lots of excitement in Week 8 as area teams were back in action. One of the biggest wins locally, had to be Mart’s 90-0 win over district rival Axtell. The Panthers were up by 70 at the half, according to Buzz Russell and the radio broadcasting team from KNES 99.1 FM (Texas 99) in Fairfield. Bremond kept their new win streak going by icing the Frost Polar Bears, 50-15. Coolidge blanked Gholson in a game that took just two quarters to play, 56-0, and the Goats had a thriller of a comeback in the fourth quarter of their game with West, before falling a tad short, 21-19. This week is critical for most area teams as they inch closer to locking in playoff seed positions in their respective districts, plus, the showdown between two longtime football rivals, meeting for the 93rd time since 1915!
Here’s a look at this week’s area matchups:

Groesbeck: The Goats have played two of the toughest teams in District 9-3A DI so far this season as both Malakoff and West sit at the top. This week, Groesbeck will be facing one of their oldest rivals in the area, Teague, with both teams facing off against each other for the 93rd time over the last 102 years. The sea of red on one side and the grove of orange on the other. Make no mistake, this game Friday night is just as big as the series is for both teams, with playoff seeds on the line. Groesbeck will have the home field advantage and the Goats offense and defense can make the big plays when it counts. Players to watch this week will be Ty Hale, Ameer Lee, Stanzley Gibson, Dylan Rand, Zach Wilson and Brayden Bradley.
Teague Lions: The Lions have done what’s needed against three of the district’s weaker teams, getting wins over Eustace, Whitney and Elkhart. This week will be one of the biggest challenges thus far this season for Teague, in facing Groesbeck. The Lions have won three consecutive games since losing to West, 42-26, in Week 5. Players to watch for Teague will be Tayvis Coleman, Trevor Cooper, Dayveon Dixon, Marcus Williams, Santos Estrada and Antonio Heard.
Summary: In rival games, you never quite know what the outcome will be, especially with both teams playing some pretty good football right now. However, Groesbeck is at home which is a big plus.
Prediction: Groesbeck 34, Teague 22
