By Stephen R. Farris, Journal Sports

Football fans may already be aware by now which teams Groesbeck will be playing with in district, after the UIL released their 2018-20 realignments last Thursday, Feb. 1.

In case you haven’t heard, Groesbeck remains in District 9-3A Division I along with Teague, West and Whitney. Joining the district this upcoming football season will be Grandview (No. 1 seed from 6-3A DI, 12-2, quarterfinalist in the playoffs), Maypearl (No. 4 seed from 6-3A DI, 7-4, bi-district finalist in the playoffs) and McGregor (No. 3 seed from 10-3A DI, 6-5, bi-district finalist in the playoffs).

The new additions will now make this a seven-team district instead of eight the past two seasons.

Malakoff and Eustace, both playing in District 9-3A DI the last two falls, will be a part of District 6-3A DI with Dallas A+, Dallas Oak Cliff, Dallas Madison and Kemp. Palestine Westwood and Elkhart move up to District 11-3A DI with Coldspring-Oakhurst, Crockett, Diboll, Franklin and Trinity.

Groesbeck will be playing Grandview and Maypearl for the first time this upcoming season, but the Goats have faced McGregor a total of 18 games, with the Bulldogs holding the series lead at 14-4-0.

The Goats have reached the playoffs both seasons spent in District 9-3A DI.

In volleyball, Groesbeck moves to District 20-3A for the 2018-19 seasons, which includes Buffalo, Crockett, Elkhart, Frankston, Groesbeck, Palestine Westwood and Teague. The same alignment will be used for basketball season as well.

In Class 2A, the defending state champion Mart Panthers of DI drop down to DII for the next two seasons, playing with Wortham, Dawson, Frost, Hubbard and Meridian. In volleyball and basketball, it looks like the Panthers will remain in District 18-2A again with Axtell, Bremond, Dawson, Hubbard, Marlin, Riesel and Wortham.

In 6-Man football (Class 1A), the Coolidge Yellowjackets move back into a four-team district with Avalon, Milford and Penelope that will make up 11-1A DI.
