West remains unbeaten in 19-AAA

By Putt Riddle, Special to the Journal

The West Lady Trojans improved its 19AAA record to 11-0 as they spoiled the Homecoming match for the Groesbeck Lady Goats with a 3-0 win on Friday, October 13 in the Groesbeck Gym. The win kept them undefeated in district play with an 11-0 record. West is 31-7 for the season. Groesbeck dropped to a 6-5 district mark. They played Clifton on Tuesday, October 17th. The Lady Goats are at Whitney at 4:30 P.M. Friday.

Only a kill by Abby Johnson marred the 1-13 run West put on the Lady Goats to begin the first set. While West had the players to make the difference, Groesbeck was hurting itself as much with returns out of bounds and other hitting errors. Finally Paige Spivey made a block that temporarily stopped the Lady Trojan surge at 2-13. Haylie Mitchell made a kill to make the score 3-13.

The next Groesbeck offensive point came on a kill by Mackenzie Gibson to make the score 6-18. Mia Podluka at middle blocker got a kill and a block for West as the set ended 9-25.

After falling behind 0-2 in the second set, Groesbeck rallied back behind the kills of Spivey and Amaria Beachum to tie the score. Then when Kennedy Cox got to serve she put in two aces in a row to build a 6-4 Groesbeck lead. It wouldn’t last very long as West rallied back to regain the lead at 6-7 and never relinquish it the rest of the set. Beachum served an ace to pull the Lady Goats within one at 8-9, but the kills of Emily Jares and Emma Nors not to mention the continuing contributions at the net of Podluka sealed the fate of the Lady Goats in the second set. Spivey got the only other offensive point for Groesbeck the rest of the second set, a 12-25 loss.
