West visitors split games with Groesbeck
West brought its varsity teams to the Groesbeck Gym Friday night, January 5th for two District 19-3A encounters. The West girls improved to a 4-1 district record with a 48-22 win. The Groesbeck boys nearly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, but held on for a 55-52 win. The Goats and Lady Goats travel to Troy for their next district games, Tuesday, January 9th.
West went inside to post Tamara Daniel a lot along with her controlling the offensive boards for easy putbacks as she scored 13 points for the visitors. The visitors were also deadly from behind the arc as four different Lady Trojans made treys. Macey Kucera led with three. Ally Hollomen scored twice while Kayla Zuehlke and Lorelei Uptmore each buried one three-pointer for a total of seven treys by West. West hit only four of 11 free throw shots, but put in 12 two point shots including six by Daniel.
The scoring by quarters was 16-8 West after the first, 24-12 at the half, 37-19 after three and the final 48-22 at the end of the game. Kennedy Cox led the Lady Goats in scoring with 11 points. Kiera Anglin made seven points. Both of them took the ball inside in trying to follow Coach Andre Daversa’s instructions to shoot the ball, try to score. He commented after the game, “We need to show more offense. They say a good defense wins games, but it takes a good offense as well. We hustled out there, but need to work more on getting the ball in the basket.”
The other Lady Goats scoring were Abby Johnson with two and Alexis Burns with four points. Johnson had seven rebounds. Getting three each were Cox and Burns. Getting one rebound apiece were Hannah Ryan and Kolbi Brown. Kyla Menzel made two steals while Burns pilfered the ball once.
In the nightcap, the Goats came out owning the gym floor for three quarters. They led the Trojans 15-6 after one, 26-15 at the half and a 14-point margin 41-27 after three. Then things changed on two fronts. The Trojans came alive while the Goats began making turnovers. Coach Bill Barstow added, “All of a sudden, we were also not getting rebounds and missing free throws.”
The Trojans began chipping away at the Goat lead cutting to 10 points, 43-33 at the 6:10 mark of the fourth quarter. Ameer Lee made a three pointer with 5:53 left in the game to put Groesbeck ahead 46-33. Hernandez answered with his trey for West 20 seconds later to make it a 10-point game again. Blaire Browder was fouled twice in a row by Brandyn Canady and made three free throws to cut the goat lead to seven, 46-39. Tyrique Carter got fouled with exactly four minutes left in the game. He made both free throw attempts to take the lead back to nine, 48-39. Kaynen Harold made two free throws for West at the 3:02 mark. Carter got fouled again and hit one of two free throws with 2:46 to go. Trevor Scott went on a scoring binge for the Trojans over the next minutes as he got three baskets and two of two free throws. The score was 51-49 Goats with 47 seconds left in the game.
West began fouling more to get a chance at the ball. The strategy almost worked as the Goats missed six of eight free throws. Brandyn Canady did make the two free throws during this stretch to build the goat lead to 53-49 with 36 seconds to go. Harold made a trey for West with 14 seconds left to make it a one-point game 53-52. A quick foul sent Brandyn Canady to the foul line where he made two shots with 12 seconds to go. The Goats managed to hold on for the 55-52 win.
Groesbeck shot well from the field making 22 0f 41 shots for 54%. The Goats were two of four from the three-point range for 50%. They hit only nine of 19 free throw chances for 47%. Nick Mosley led the way hitting 10 of 12 shots for 20 points to go along with 10 rebounds for a double-double. Randy Canady was also in double figures scoring 11 points hitting five of his 10 shots and one of one free throws. Two Goats scored seven points each, Ameer Lee and Jake Pringle. Lee hit one of two trey attempts along with two other baskets as he shot 50% from the field. Pringle was deadly on a jump shot from the side hitting one trey and two other baskets. He missed one free throw. Brandyn Canady made his only shot from the field and four of eight free throws for six points. Carter made three of four free throw attempts for his contribution to the game. Ty Hale was one of two from the charity stripe for one point.
In other stats, Brandyn Canady and Pringle each had two assists and two steals. Carter had two assists. Leading in assists was Lee with five along with two steals. Hale had six rebounds and two assists. The Goats had 15 turnovers for the game.
