Going through a file of my mother’s—originally my grandmother’s— papers, I found this article. Wilson Bros was owned by my great-great-great-grandfather and later by my great-grandfather and his brothers. George Wilson, mentioned in the article, was my great uncle. No date is listed, but judging by the type of paper, it likely dates from the 1960s or earlier.

Residents across Central Texas once followed the case of Lawrence C. Pope, a former banker whose sudden slide into bank robbery drew broad attention. Pope, 42, had been a bank examiner and later held responsible positions in Dallas and Abilene before becoming president of the West National Bank in 1958. That bank’s ownership had been tied to businessman C. L. Bridges, whose insurance companies collapsed in the late 1950s. When the Bridges firms failed, the bank stock shifted to new owners who disagreed with Pope over policy. He resigned on Sept. 1, 1960, the same day he sold his controlling interest in another institution, the First State Bank of Avalon. Soon afterward he purchased two weekly newspapers printed in Giddings.

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28. We live in a society that moves at the speed of light. This means our ability to gain new knowledge by technology doubles at least every three months. Yet in this fast pace and ever-changing world God promises that all things work for the good of those who love God. This means for those who have by faith ask Jesus Christ into their heart and life as personal savior God promises good things. As we approach Thanksgiving holidays life seems to speed up and we forget that spiritually we have more to be thankful for than we often acknowledge. Regardless of where you live or the size of your family slow down and take time to give glory and honor unto the Lord Jesus Christ for all that he has given you in this life. Even if you face sickness, financial challenges, family problems, loneliness, depression, or the loss of a family member God has a plan for your life. Will you take time for God’s Word, prayer and church attendance in the days ahead? If not, Why?
