Before America Entered the War, a Young R.A.F. Pilot Spoke in Groesbeck
On March 7, 1941, months before the United States entered World War II, a rain-soaked but capacity crowd gathered in Groesbeck to hear a firsthand account of the war raging across Europe. According to the Journal, Ira Lee Sullivan, a young Hillsboro aviator who had recently returned after nine months with the Royal Air Force, held the audience “spell bound” for nearly an hour and a half as he described combat in the skies over Britain and Germany.
